The Evergeen Valley College, Chabot College and New Haven Adult School programs would not have been possible without the generous support of the Economic & Workforce Development Through the California Community Colleges- California Applied Biotechnology Center – Bay Area. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the EWD for their dedication to promoting science literacy.

Spring Homeschools - Maps & Directions are here

SSW is unique in its breadth of curriculum (physical, earth and life science), and for its tiered program meeting the needs of all age groups (pre-K through 12). We offer an after school career mentorship program that enables students to participate in on-going science and engineering research programs.

An integral part of the SSW program is an excellent Advanced Student Research Program, that involves advanced undergraduate and graduate students mentoring junior and senior high school students on their projects. Our workshops are filled with stories, colorful characters, miscues, triumphs, and unlikely sources of inspiration. Using this vibrant history is our way to engage students in both the understanding of content and the broader issue of the nature of science. Introducing students to this hidden side of science can help them to realize and understand that:

  • Scientists are just people like themselves
  • Scientists make mistakes like anyone else
  • All different kinds of people have and can become scientists
  • Discoveries can often take a long time, and an even longer time before people believe them
  • There is no single way to do science. It's is a mixture of inspiration and hypotheses from many sources
  • Science has a social, economic, and cultural context that shape the paths of discovery and acceptance of scientific ideas
Schmahl Science Workshops is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation.
